1/26/2024 0 Comments Protege luggage hardcover![]() That’s due in part to the bag’s knack for carrying everything from multiple outfits to toiletries to water bottles to snacks. And to no one’s surprise considering the brand’s popularity, it was a joy to bring everywhere. We brought the Le Pliage Expandable on a three-week trip to Europe, on various beach trips, on long road trips, and, of course, on a handful of flights. The Details: 18.5 x 12 x 6-9.5 inches | 20-30 liters | 4.16 pounds | Nylon, polyester, hypalon Oh, and its size is perfect for placing underseat, even when expanded to a 30-liter capacity instead. And while it did attract quite a bit of dirt, we’re happy to report there were no scratches, scuffs, or permanent damage. Once packed, we tossed the backpack around and dropped it on the floor to test its durability. This made it ultra-easy to pack our things and find them again at a later time. Beyond the pockets, though, we were really into the fact that this pack opens clamshell style, like a wheeled suitcase. ![]() In fact, there are so many pockets in this backpack, it took us a good while during our tests to explore all of them - but once we did, we realized how useful they all are. It fit way more than we thought it would thanks to its expandable and adjustable features as well as its many, many pockets. After using the bag regularly for four months, we love that it packs like a suitcase, but looks like a backpack. The Details: 16.3 x 11.2 x 7.2 inches | 22 liters | 3 pounds (nylon), 3.6 pounds (vegan leather) | Nylon or vegan leatherĭon’t let this backpack’s small stature fool you: it actually packs a powerful punch. It comes in durable nylon or vegan leather and nine colors, all of which are monochromatic and chic. The frame of this duffel is sturdy, though it can easily squish down, if needed, to fit under a seat. While we did find it slightly difficult to remove, we didn’t mind it too much, because we know that means it won’t easily fall off in transit. We additionally loved the toiletry bag that attaches to the front of the duffel, freeing up space inside the duffel’s main compartment. ![]() The duffel also felt unexpectedly lightweight when fully packed, which is always a good sign when it comes to personal items. However, if you’re a stickler for organization, you’ll appreciate the abundance of pockets, including a dedicated laptop slot. Something interesting we noticed while testing this duffel is it’s so spacious, you really don’t need to strategize how you pack it - everything will fit no matter the order or placement. Unlike similar bags, it doesn’t have a trolley sleeve. The Details: 9.25 x 16.5 x 9 inches | 22 liters | 2.3 pounds | Leather, DuraGuard-treated fabric This UnderSeat Tote is also noticeably sleek with rounded corners, like a more stylish alternative to a duffel for anyone who wants a zippered bag that is not a traditional tote shape. There was no damage to the bag or the contents when it was dropped either. There are versatile carrying options as well, thanks to the two sturdy top handles, padded detachable shoulder strap, and a trolley sleeve. We found we could easily stuff this with several days’ worth of clothes as well as a pair of shoes and plenty of toiletries, and it still remained compact enough to slide under a plane seat with ease. The bag has multiple interior and exterior pockets and a large main compartment, so there’s really nothing it's lacking. If you're looking for a polished, zippered bag, the Travelpro x Travel + Leisure UnderSeat Tote is a solid personal item choice. When packed full, it’s hard to get a laptop into the laptop sleeve. The Details: 13 x 18 x 7.5 inches | 28.8 liters | 2.4 pounds | Leather, nylon The multiple strap options make this a versatile pick and, despite its spaciousness, we didn’t think it looked bulky, even on a smaller frame. We love that you can fully detach those straps when not in use (so the bag looks like a regular zippered tote), but found they actually don’t look bad when left hanging on the bag either. Perhaps the feature that impressed us most, though, was the tote’s ability to convert into a backpack thanks to a pair of extra straps. On top of that, there’s even a small pouch meant to house cosmetics and other small items connected to the rest of the bag by a strap. There are also dedicated pockets for a water bottle, passport, phone, and wallet. In addition to its spacious main section, this bag boasts a separate, exterior easy-access compartment (with its own zipper!), as well as a huge, padded laptop slot that zips shut. It came as no surprise to us that Caraa’s Studio Tote Leather wound up being the best of the best - we’re long-time fans of the brand’s organizational features, after all.
